Stretch-tuneable dielectric mirrors and optical microcavities.

چکیده
We demonstrate how tuneable Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs) and resonant micro-cavities can be built by a scalable layer assembly of the transparent utility rubbers polydimethylsiloxane and polystyrene-polyisoprene. Stretching the devices by more than 60% leads to an affine contraction of the layer thicknesses thereby tuning both DBR and cavity modes across the entire visible spectrum. Such rapidly- and reversibly- stretch-tuneable cavities can be used in tuneable micro-lasers and for quantitative optical strain sensing applications.

Second-harmonic generation in doubly resonant microcavities with periodic dielectric mirrors.
Strong enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) is expected in one-dimensional microcavities when double resonance for the pump and the harmonic fields, as well as phase matching, are achieved. The realization of a doubly resonant microcavity with dielectric mirrors made of nonbirefringent materials is difficult because of the refractive index dispersion of the constituent media. Here we...
متن کاملOptical spectroscopy of GaN microcavities with thicknesses controlled using a plasma etchback
The effect of an etch-back step to control the cavity length within GaN-based microcavities formed between two dielectric Bragg mirrors was investigated using photoluminescence and reflectivity. The structures are fabricated using a combination of a laser lift-off technique to separate epitaxial III-N layers from their sapphire substrates and electron-beam evaporation to deposit silica/zirconia...
متن کاملFinite-difference time-domain modeling of dispersive-material photonic bandgap structures
Photonic bandgap (PBG) structures constructed from lossy, dispersive dielectric and metallic materials are characterized in terms of their reflection and transmission properties. Particular emphasis is given to PBG structures with defects. These PBG structures are modeled analytically with an ABCD matrix method for their single-frequency response. They also are modeled numerically with a finite...
متن کاملStrong exciton–photon coupling in a low-Q all-metal mirror microcavity
We report the experimental observation of strong exciton–photon coupling in a planar microcavity composed of an organic semiconductor positioned between two metallic ~silver! mirrors. Via transmission and reflectivity measurements, we observe a very large, room temperature Rabi splitting in excess of 300 meV. We show that the Rabi-splitting is enhanced in all-metal microcavities by a factor of ...
متن کاملMicrocavities with suspended subwavelength structured mirrors
We investigate the generic properties of optical cavities with subwavelength structured mirrors whose reflectivity profile exhibit Fano resonances. We focus in particular on short microcavities and mirrors with high quality factor Fano resonances for which the cavity free-spectral range becomes larger than the width of the Fano resonance. In this unusual regime, the transmission spectrum of the...
